Today, I felt like having some fish, so I decided to make myself a nice piece of salmon belly. It’s not something I do every day, but when I do, I really enjoy the process. So, I went to the store and picked out a decent-looking piece of salmon belly. I’m no expert, but I grabbed one that seemed okay. It’s usually a good idea to pick salmon that has nice color.
Got home, and the first thing I did was to get the salmon ready. I just gave it a quick rinse under cold water and patted it dry with some paper towels. Then, I sprinkled some salt and pepper on it, nothing fancy.
Next up, I heated up a pan with a bit of oil. I always like to use a non-stick pan, cause it makes things a lot easier. Once the pan was hot, I carefully placed the salmon belly in, skin-side down. This is my favorite way to cook salmon cause you can actually see it cooking from the bottom up. Plus you can hear the skin when it is ready. When it hits the pan, it means that the skin is crispy, right?
I let it cook for a few minutes, I just watched the color of the flesh slowly turning lighter. I guess it is the most satisfying thing to watch while cooking salmon. Also, the sound of the sizzle makes me feel like a chef. I don’t really know when to flip it, but I just waited until the fish cooked a little bit then flip it.
After flipping it, I cooked the other side for just a couple more minutes. And it turned out pretty good. I didn’t want to overcook it, you know? A little flaky is how I like it. If you like flaky salmon, that means it is done. If it still has some sort of reddish color, that means it is not done yet.
I served it up with some rice and veggies I had in the fridge. It was a simple meal, but man, it was satisfying. The salmon was tender and had that nice crispy skin.
Honestly, cooking salmon belly isn’t rocket science. And I’m sure there are a ton of ways to do it, but this is just how I like to do it. I heard that it’s okay to eat salmon every day, but I don’t know for sure. Maybe I will change my protein choices so that I don’t get too much mercury. Anyways, I hope this inspires someone to give it a try. It’s easier than you might think!
