Okay, so I’ve been on this huge sushi kick lately. But sometimes, I get tired of just sushi, you know? I need something on the side to mix things up. So, I started experimenting with different side dishes, and let me tell you, it’s been a game-changer.
The First Try: Keep it Simple
First, I started with the basics. You can’t go wrong with edamame, right? I just bought a bag of frozen edamame, boiled it for a few minutes, and sprinkled some sea salt on top. Boom. Done. It’s super easy and always hits the spot.
Getting a Little Fancy
Then, I wanted to try something a bit more… involved. I found this recipe for Japanese cucumber salad (Sunomono). I sliced up some cucumbers super thin, added some rice vinegar, a little sugar, and a pinch of salt. I let that sit for like 30 minutes, and wow! It was so refreshing and crunchy. Perfect with the richness of the sushi.

Experimenting with Textures
- I also tried making seaweed salad. I used the dried seaweed.
- Rehydrated it, mixed it with some sesame oil, soy sauce, and a few other things.
- It was pretty good, but honestly, it’s easier to just buy it pre-made.
I thought that was the easy way.
Miso Soup: A Must-Try
Another thing I did was make miso soup. Okay, “make” is a strong word. I bought those instant miso soup packets. You just add hot water, and you’re good to go. It’s warm, comforting, and a classic for a reason.
The Final Lineup
So now, whenever I have sushi night, I usually go with a combination of these: edamame (because it’s a must), cucumber salad (for that refreshing crunch), and maybe some miso soup if I’m feeling it. It’s all about finding what you like and what complements the sushi best. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things!
It’s actually pretty fun to see your skill in cooking is growing.
