Substitute for Chives: Simple Swaps for Every Recipe.

Okay, so, I had this recipe I wanted to try out, but guess what? It called for chives, and I didn’t have any on hand. I mean, who even keeps chives in their fridge all the time, right? Anyway, I wasn’t about to let that stop me, so I started thinking, “What can I use instead of chives?”

First, I looked around my kitchen. I found some green onions in the fridge and thought, “These look kinda like chives, maybe they’ll work?” I did a little digging online and, sure enough, a lot of people were saying green onions are a good substitute. They have that mild oniony flavor, just like chives.

  • I chopped up the green onions, both the white and green parts.
  • Then, I tossed them into the recipe where the chives were supposed to go.

While I was at it, I also remembered seeing something about leeks. I didn’t have any fresh ones, but I checked my spice rack and found some onion powder. Apparently, in a pinch, onion powder can stand in for dried chives. Good to know!

For another dish I was making, which was more of a garnish situation, I spotted some parsley in my fridge. It’s not the same flavor as chives, obviously, but it added that nice pop of green, which is what I was going for. I even found some microgreens that I decided to use just to make it look a little more fancy.

The Results

Honestly, it all turned out pretty great! The green onions worked like a charm in the main dish. The onion powder did the trick in the other recipe where I needed that subtle onion flavor. And the parsley and microgreens? They made everything look super professional, even if I do say so myself. So, yeah, you definitely don’t need chives to make a delicious meal. There are plenty of alternatives out there that work just as well, if not better!
