Yesterday, I was flipping through some old recipe books and stumbled upon this intriguing one called “Hawaii Pickled Plum”. Sounded exotic, right? I’ve always been a fan of anything pickled, and plums are great, so I figured, why not give it a shot?
First things first, I gathered all the ingredients. The recipe called for fresh plums, and luckily, I found some really nice, ripe ones at the local market. Then I needed some white vinegar, sugar, salt, and a few other spices. Nothing too crazy, most of it I already had in my pantry.
Next up, I washed the plums thoroughly and poked a few holes in each one with a toothpick. Apparently, this helps the pickling solution seep in better. Then, I mixed the vinegar, sugar, salt, and spices in a pot and brought it to a boil. The smell was already pretty amazing, sweet and tangy at the same time.

Once the pickling liquid was ready, I carefully placed the plums into some sterilized jars. I used some old jam jars I had lying around. Then I poured the hot liquid over the plums, making sure they were completely submerged. I screwed the lids on tight and let them cool down to room temperature.
Now, the hardest part – waiting! The recipe said to let the plums pickle for at least a week, but I’m not the most patient person, to say the least. I ended up waiting for a few days before I cracked open a jar and tried one.
And you know what? They were pretty darn good! The plums had absorbed the sweet and sour flavors of the pickling liquid, and they had a nice, firm texture. They were a bit tart, but in a good way. I think they’ll get even better with more time, but I’m definitely happy with how they turned out.
- Washed and prepared the plums.
- Mixed and boiled the pickling liquid.
- Packed the plums into jars and covered them with the liquid.
- Waited a few days (couldn’t resist!).
- Enjoyed the first taste of my homemade pickled plums!
All in all, it was a fun little kitchen experiment. If you’re looking for a unique and tasty treat, I’d definitely recommend giving this Hawaii Pickled Plum recipe a try. It’s not difficult at all, and the results are totally worth it. I’m already thinking about what I can use these pickled plums for. Maybe in a salad, or as a side dish with some grilled meat? The possibilities are endless!
