Okay, so the other day, I was craving some waffle fries, but I didn’t want to go out or order in. I figured, why not try making them in my air fryer? I’d seen some posts online about it, and it seemed easy enough. Plus, I love how crispy things get in the air fryer. So, I decided to give it a shot.

First, I grabbed a couple of potatoes from the pantry. I washed them real good and then got to work on cutting them into that classic waffle shape. It was a bit tricky, I won’t lie. You gotta slice them one way, then rotate and slice again to get that crisscross pattern. I definitely messed up a few times, but hey, it’s all part of the learning process, right?

  • Washed the potatoes
  • Sliced them into waffle shapes
  • Soaked them in cold water

Once I had my waffle fries all cut up, I soaked them in a bowl of cold water for about 20 minutes. I heard this helps to remove some of the starch, which makes them crispier. After the soak, I patted them dry with some paper towels. This part is important, you don’t want them to be wet when they go into the air fryer.

Next, I tossed the fries with a little bit of olive oil and some seasoning. I kept it simple with just salt, pepper, and a bit of garlic powder. I wanted the potato flavor to really shine through. Then, I preheated my air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I think it’s a good step to keep your food crispy.

Into the Air Fryer

Once the air fryer was hot, I arranged the fries in a single layer in the basket. You don’t want to overcrowd it, otherwise, they won’t cook evenly. I had to do mine in a couple of batches. I set the timer for 15 minutes, but I made sure to shake the basket halfway through to make sure they got crispy on all sides.

When the timer went off, I checked on them, and they looked golden brown and delicious! I gave them a little taste test, and they were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Just how I like them!

Honestly, I was pretty impressed with how they turned out. It was way easier than I thought it would be, and they tasted just as good as, if not better than, the ones you get at a restaurant. Plus, they were probably a lot healthier since they weren’t deep-fried. I’ll definitely be making these again. Maybe next time I’ll try some different seasonings or dipping sauces. The possibilities are endless!
