Okay, here is my blog post about my experience with caraway seed substitutes:
So, the other day I tried to make this Irish soda bread, you know, the kind with the caraway seeds? But guess what? I was all out of caraway seeds. I rummaged through my spice cabinet, hoping I had some stashed away, but no luck. And I really didn’t want to run to the store just for that one thing.
So, I thought, “What can I use instead?” I remembered reading somewhere that some spices are kinda similar, but I couldn’t remember which ones. Then, my brain finally kicked in, and I remembered that fennel seeds and dill seeds might work. They all have that licorice-y vibe, right?

My Experiment Begins
I decided to do a little experiment. I whipped up a small batch of the dough and split it in half.
- For one half, I used fennel seeds. I ground them up a little, ’cause they’re bigger than caraway seeds.
- For the other half, I threw in some dill seeds.
I baked both of them, and honestly, they both smelled pretty good while they were in the oven. The moment of truth came when they were cool enough to taste.
The one with the fennel seeds was pretty close to the real deal! It had that same kind of savory, slightly sweet thing going on. The dill seeds were okay, but it was a little different. It still tasted good, but it wasn’t quite the same as caraway, I love the experiment.
So, if you ever find yourself in the same boat, don’t panic! You can totally substitute caraway seeds. Fennel seeds are a solid choice, and dill seeds will do in a pinch. Just remember, it might not be exactly the same, but it’ll probably still be delicious.
The important thing is that I made it finally and shared my experience with you.
