Okay, so I was feeling adventurous in the kitchen today and decided to try my hand at some Syrian dishes. I’ve always been fascinated by Middle Eastern cuisine, with all its spices and flavors, so I thought, why not give it a go?
First, I did a bit of digging online to see what kinds of dishes are popular in Syria. I stumbled upon something called “Jazmaz,” which I learned is basically a Syrian version of shakshuka. Sounded interesting, and I do love a good breakfast-for-dinner situation.
I gathered my ingredients: some tomatoes, onions, garlic, eggs, and a bunch of spices like cumin, coriander, and paprika. Oh, and some fresh parsley for garnish, because why not?

I started by chopping up the onions and garlic. Then, I heated up some olive oil in a pan and sautéed the onions until they were nice and soft. I threw in the garlic and let it cook for a bit, just until it was fragrant. Be careful not to burn it, though!
Next, I added the chopped tomatoes to the pan and let them simmer for a while, until they broke down and formed a nice sauce. This is where the spices come in. I sprinkled in a good amount of cumin, coriander, and paprika, and stirred everything together. It already smelled amazing!
Once the sauce had thickened up a bit, I made some little wells in it and cracked an egg into each one. Then I covered the pan and let the eggs cook until the whites were set but the yolks were still runny. That’s the best part, right?
Finally, I took the pan off the heat and sprinkled some chopped fresh parsley over the top. And there it was, my very own homemade Jazmaz!
I have to say, it turned out pretty darn good for a first attempt. It was flavorful, satisfying, and a fun little culinary adventure. I think I’ll be exploring more Syrian recipes in the future. It seems like a cuisine with a delightful blend of flavors and traditions. Who knows what other delicious dishes I might discover?
