Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try dehydrating food for a while now. It seems like a great way to preserve fruits and veggies, and I love the idea of having homemade snacks on hand. So, I finally took the plunge and got myself a dehydrator. Here’s how my first attempt went, step-by-step.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to decide what to dehydrate. I had a bunch of apples that were starting to look a little sad, so I figured those would be perfect. I also grabbed some bananas and strawberries, because why not?
Next up, prep work. I washed all the fruit thoroughly. Then came the slicing. I tried to make the slices as uniformly thin as possible, maybe about 1/4 inch thick. This is supposed to help everything dry evenly. I used the tools what i have –knife. The bananas were super easy to slice, the apples were a little trickier, and the strawberries, well, let’s just say they were a bit fiddly.

The Dehydrating Process
I arranged the fruit slices on the dehydrator trays, making sure they weren’t overlapping. Then, I set the dehydrator to 135°F (which is what the manual recommended for fruit) and let it run. I didn’t use any fancy settings, it can be set tempreture and timer.
- Apples: These took the longest, about 8 hours.
- Bananas: These were done in around 6 hours.
- Strawberries: Surprisingly, these were the quickest, ready in about 5 hours.
I checked on the fruit every few hours, mostly out of curiosity. I could see them slowly shriveling up and getting crispier. It was pretty cool to watch!
The Results
Once everything was dried, I let it cool completely before storing it. I put each type of fruit in separate airtight containers. I’ve heard that’s important to keep them from absorbing moisture and getting soft again.
And the taste test? The apple chips were my favorite. They were sweet, chewy, and had a really concentrated apple flavor. The banana chips were good too, kind of like a healthier version of those store-bought ones. The strawberries were interesting – a bit tart, but still tasty.
Overall, my first dehydrating experience was a success! It was a bit time-consuming, but super easy. I’m already thinking about what to dehydrate next. Maybe some herbs from my garden? Or even some jerky? The possibilities seem endless!
