This here is about the eats, the good grub from Hidalgo, Mexico. They got all sorts of yummy stuff there, I tell ya.
Tacos, Them’s Good Eats
Now, tacos, everyone knows ’bout them. They’re like the king of Mexican food, I reckon. You can stuff ’em with all sorts of things.
Like steak, that chorizo sausage, and even them innards if you’re into that kinda thing. I like mine with a bit of everything, I do.

- Steak Tacos – Oh boy, them’s juicy!
- Chorizo Tacos – Spicy and flavorful, just how I like ’em!
- All sorts of other fillings, you name it!
That Zacahuil Thing
They got these big ol’ tamales down in the Huasteca part of Hidalgo. They call ’em zacahuil. And lemme tell ya, they’re huge!
Big enough to feed a whole family, I swear. And they put pork in ’em. Good, tasty pork. Makes my mouth water just thinkin’ ’bout it.
I heard they make it different ways, sometimes with chicken, sometimes with turkey. But pork, that’s the best in my opinion.
Beef Stew with Cactus?
Now, this one might sound a bit strange, but they make a beef stew down there with this sour cactus fruit. They call it xoconostle.
Sounds odd, I know, but it’s actually pretty darn tasty. The sour fruit, it gives the stew a real nice tang. You gotta try it if you ever get the chance.
They also got this thing called mole de frijol. It’s like a bean sauce, real thick and rich. You eat it with meat, or tortillas, or just about anything, really. It’s good stuff.
Them Bug Eggs, Escamoles
Okay, now this one’s a bit out there. They eat these things called escamoles in Hidalgo. And what are they, you ask?
Well, they’re ant eggs. Yep, you heard me right. Ant eggs. I know, it sounds kinda gross, but people down there, they love ’em.

They say they taste kinda like butter or nuts. I ain’t tried ’em myself, I’ll be honest. But I hear they’re a delicacy, a real special treat.
I once saw some ladies, cooking them up, they looked like they are having a good time, laughing and cooking. Maybe I should try them next time.
Other Grub in Hidalgo
There’s plenty more to eat in Hidalgo than just what I mentioned. They got all sorts of other dishes, I’m sure.
I’ve heard of barbacoa, that’s meat cooked real slow in a pit. And mixiotes, that’s meat cooked in these special leaves.
And of course, they got your regular Mexican food, too. Enchiladas, quesadillas, all that good stuff. If you are ever hungry, you can find good food there.
I heard there is this restaurant called “Hidalgo Mexican Restaurant”, it is probably good. I never been there, but the name sounds good.
Hidalgo Ain’t Just About Food
Now, Hidalgo ain’t just about the food, though that’s a big part of it, I gotta say. They got other things to see and do there, too.
They got these hot springs, natural hot water. Folks go there to relax and soak in the warm water. Sounds nice, don’t it?

And they got these old ruins, from way back when. Tula, they call it. I ain’t much for history, but I reckon it’s interestin’ to some folks.
It is just a lot of old rocks, but people like to go look at them. I guess it is a good place for taking photos.
There is also this place called Huasteca, it is a pretty place, lots of green and mountains. Good for people who like to walk around outside.
Come Visit Hidalgo, Why Don’t Ya?
So, if you’re ever lookin’ for a place to go, why not give Hidalgo a try? They got good food, good people, and some interestin’ sights to see.
Just remember what I told ya ’bout the food. Try the zacahuil, and the beef stew with the xoconostle. And if you’re feelin’ brave, maybe give them escamoles a try, too.
You’ll have a good time, I guarantee it. It is a good place, you will like it. Even if you don’t like the bug eggs, you will like the tacos.
Hidalgo, Mexico, it’s a place with a lot to offer. Especially the food. You won’t regret it, that much I know. Good food and good times are waiting for you in Hidalgo. You will like the food, I am sure of it.
