What to Eat with Sushi: Best Side Dishes & Pairings!

Okay, so I’ve always loved sushi, but sometimes I get bored with the same old routine. I wanted to spice things up a bit, so I decided to explore what else goes well with sushi. I’m no chef, just a regular person, So here’s my personal trial run of what to eat with sushi.

My Sushi Pairing Experiment

First, I grabbed some basic sushi rolls – California rolls, spicy tuna, the usual suspects. I didn’t want anything too fancy that would overpower the experiments. Then, I raided my fridge and pantry for potential side dishes.

The Lineup

Here’s what I ended up trying:

What to Eat with Sushi: Best Side Dishes & Pairings!
  • Edamame: Classic, right? I always order this at sushi restaurants, so I figured it was a safe bet. I simply steamed some frozen edamame and sprinkled them with a little sea salt.
  • Miso Soup: Another standard. Warming a simple miso soup.
  • Seaweed Salad: I love the tangy, slightly sweet flavor of seaweed salad.
  • Pickled Ginger (Gari): I always eat this between different types of sushi to cleanse my palate. But I wondered, what if I actually ate it with the sushi?
  • Tempura: I found some frozen shrimp and vegetable tempura in my freezer, so I thought, why not? I baked them until they were crispy.
  • Fruit : I cut Some Mango and avocado.

The Taste Test

I laid everything out and started experimenting. Here’s what I discovered:

  • Edamame and Miso Soup: These were just as good at home as they are in a restaurant. No surprises there. They’re comforting and familiar.
  • Seaweed Salad: Still a winner! The cool, refreshing taste of the seaweed salad contrasted nicely with the richness of the sushi.
  • Pickled Ginger: Okay, eating it with the sushi was interesting. It definitely added a sharp, pungent kick. I liked it with the milder rolls, like the California roll, but it was a bit too much with the spicy tuna.
  • Tempura: This was surprisingly good! The crispy, savory tempura provided a nice textural contrast to the soft sushi. The shrimp tempura was my favorite.
  • Fruit: The mango went really well, especially with the California rolls that already had avocado in them. It added a nice sweetness.

My Verdict

Overall, my little experiment was a success! I found some new favorite pairings and reconfirmed some old ones. The tempura and mango and avocado were the biggest surprises – I’ll definitely be having those with my sushi more often. I think next time, I might try some different fruits, maybe some pineapple or even some thinly sliced strawberries. I might even try some grilled chicken skewers or something. The possibilities are endless, really. My Sushi adventure will be continued.
