Okay, so I’ve always been a HUGE dumpling fan. Like, seriously, give me a plate of those little pockets of deliciousness, and I’m a happy camper. But I’ve always struggled with what to serve with them. It’s gotta be something that complements the dumplings, not overpowers them, you know?
So, I started experimenting. First, I went with the classics.
My Dumpling Side Dish Experiments
- Plain White Rice: Okay, this was… fine. It’s rice. It fills you up, but it doesn’t really add anything to the experience. It needed something more.
- Fried Rice: Better! The fried rice had more flavor, but sometimes it felt a little too heavy with the dumplings. The texture of rice with texture of dumplings became too much.
- Stir-fried Veggies: I tried a simple mix of broccoli, carrots, and peppers. This was a step in the right direction! The crunchiness was nice, and the veggies felt healthy. But it still felt like something was missing. I needed more of a kick!
Then, I started getting a little more adventurous. I thought, “What about sauces? What about something with a little zing?”

- Cucumber Salad: I whipped up a quick cucumber salad with some rice vinegar, a touch of sugar, and some sesame seeds. BINGO! This was it! The coolness of the cucumber, the tanginess of the vinegar… it was the perfect counterpoint to the savory dumplings.
- Spicy Dipping Sauce: Most of the time, I will also prepare a little sauce plate. I added some chili oil, a dash of soy sauce, and a tiny bit of black vinegar. The spicy kick was amazing!
Finally, I realised, there’s no one “perfect” side. It depends on my mood! Sometimes I want the fresh, clean taste of the cucumber salad. Sometimes I crave that spicy kick. And sometimes, when I cook the dumplings with some veges, I just want a simple soy sauce dipping.
The important thing is to try different combinations and find some that match your taste. And I suggest others doing the same as I did!
