Okay, so the other day I was having some friends over, and I wanted to grill something a bit more special than the usual burgers and hot dogs. I’ve been hearing a lot about tri-tip steak, so I decided to give it a shot. But first, I needed to figure out the cost. Here’s how my little tri-tip price adventure went.
My Tri-Tip Price Hunt
First, I hit up my local grocery store. I wasn’t expecting anything fancy, just a regular supermarket. I walked to the meat section and looked around for the tri-tip.
- I found it, and the price was about $9.99 per pound. It’s look not bad.
Then, just to be sure, I checked out a butcher shop nearby. I always feel like butchers have higher quality meat, even if it costs a bit more. And, I was somehow right.

- The butcher shop had tri-tip for $12.99 per pound. It definitely looked better – more marbling and a deeper red color.
Finally, I thought about that big-box store, you know, the one where you buy everything in bulk. So, I went.
- The price is about $7.99 per pound there, and it was actually pretty good quality.
The Final Decision
After seeing all the options, I decided to go with the big-box store’s tri-tip. I figure out, since I was cooking for a crowd, saving a couple of bucks per pound would add up. Plus, the quality looked good enough, I felt very confident and excited to cook the steak. I grabbed a couple of nice-looking tri-tips, each weighing around 2.5 pounds. I paid around $40 for both, and that’s acceptable to me.
I ended up grilling them with a simple salt, pepper, and garlic powder rub. They turned out amazing! Everyone loved it, and I felt like a grilling champion.
Totally worth the price hunt!
