Need a Substitute Peanut Oil? Try These Simple Options!

Okay, so the other day I was all set to make this stir-fry I’ve been craving, right? I had all my veggies chopped, the chicken was marinating, and then BAM! I realized I was out of peanut oil. Total bummer, because that nutty flavor is kinda key to the whole dish.

But, hey, I’m not one to give up easily. I started digging through my pantry, hoping for a miracle. I considered some other oils, but I needed to find the best fit possible!

The Great Oil Hunt

  • First, I grabbed the safflower oil. I remembered reading somewhere that it’s pretty neutral in flavor, which is good. It wouldn’t overpower my stir-fry, but it wouldn’t add that special something either. It was a decent backup, though.
  • Next up was sesame oil. Now, sesame oil has a REALLY strong flavor. I use it sometimes, but usually just a tiny bit because it can be overwhelming. I figured it would probably clash with the other flavors I had going on, so I put that one back.
  • Then I found some walnut oil. It has the taste that I want, but I wasn’t sure.

I decided to go with the safflower oil. I figured it was the safest bet for not messing up the taste of my stir-fry. I heated up my wok, poured in the safflower oil, and got cooking.

It turned out pretty good! Definitely not the same as when I use peanut oil, but still tasty. The veggies were cooked perfectly, the chicken was juicy, and the sauce was on point. It just lacked that little bit of nutty goodness that I love.

So, lesson learned: always check your peanut oil levels before you get your heart set on stir-fry! But, if you do run out, safflower oil is a pretty solid substitute. It won’t give you the same flavor, but it won’t ruin your dish either. Next time, though, I’m making sure I’m stocked up on the good stuff!
