Okay, here is my sharing about how I made an old-fashioned with brown sugar simple syrup:

I started making cocktails at home a few months ago. You know, it’s way cheaper than those fancy bars, and you can make whatever you want. So the other day, I really wanted an old-fashioned, but I only had brown sugar at home. No white sugar at all. I was like, “Hmm, can I make a simple syrup with brown sugar?” Turns out, you totally can!

Making the Brown Sugar Simple Syrup

First, I grabbed a small pot and put in one cup of brown sugar and one cup of water. It was just some regular brown sugar from the grocery store, nothing special. I turned the stove on to medium heat and started stirring.

You need to keep stirring until all the sugar is gone, like, completely dissolved. This took me about 5 minutes, maybe a little longer. The mixture started to bubble a bit, and that’s when I knew it was getting close.

Once the sugar was all dissolved, I turned off the heat and just let it cool down. You don’t want to burn yourself, right? I poured the syrup into a jar I had lying around and stuck it in the fridge. Easy peasy.

Now, for the fun part – the actual cocktail! I got my favorite whiskey glass and tossed in a sugar cube. Well, since I only have brown sugar syrup, I put in about half an ounce of the syrup. Then, I added a few dashes of Angostura bitters. I muddled them together a bit, just to get the flavors mixing.

Next, I filled the glass with ice. Lots of ice. And then, the star of the show – two ounces of bourbon. You can use rye too, but I’m a bourbon guy. I gave it a good stir, like 20-30 seconds, to chill everything down.

Finally, I squeezed an orange peel over the drink and dropped it in. That citrusy smell? Amazing! Some people like to use a cherry, but I’m all about the orange.

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 ounces bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Orange peel, for garnish

And that’s it! My homemade old-fashioned with brown sugar simple syrup. Honestly, it tasted pretty damn good. The brown sugar added a richer, kind of caramel-like flavor. I’ll definitely be making this again. If you’re ever out of white sugar, don’t worry, just use brown sugar. It works like a charm!
