Okay, so the other day I was trying to make some chocolate chip cookies, the classic ones, you know? And the recipe I was looking at called for “1 cup of chocolate chips.” Now, I usually eyeball stuff, but this time I wanted to be a bit more precise. So, I thought, how much is that really in grams?
First off, I grabbed my trusty kitchen scale – a digital one, ’cause those are way more accurate. Then, I got a measuring cup and filled it up with the chocolate chips. I made sure to level it off, not heaping or anything. Once I had my cup ready, I zeroed out the scale, put a bowl on it, and zeroed it again to just measure the chips.
Carefully, I poured the chocolate chips from the cup into the bowl on the scale. I watched the numbers climb up, trying to see where they’d land. It was pretty interesting to see how the weight changed as I added more chips.

- First try: I poured in the chips, and the scale read around 175 grams. Hmm, okay, that seemed a bit low, maybe I didn’t pack them in enough.
- Second try: I did it again, this time tapping the cup a bit to settle the chips. The scale went up to about 185 grams. Getting closer!
- Third try: I filled the cup one more time, really making sure it was packed but still level. This time, the scale showed around 195 grams. Alright, that felt more accurate.
- Fourth Try: I filled the cup again, and the scale showed about 200 grams. I thought the chocolate chips are really packed.
So, after doing this a few times, I realized that 1 cup of chocolate chips is roughly between 175 and 200 grams. It kind of depends on how tightly you pack them in the cup. I ended up going with around 190 grams for my cookies, splitting the difference, you could say.
Anyway, it was a fun little experiment. Now I know a bit more about measuring chocolate chips, and my cookies turned out pretty darn good, if I do say so myself! It’s always cool to learn these little kitchen tricks. Makes baking a bit more of a science, which I dig. Next time you’re baking, give it a try and see what you get. You might be surprised!
