Sides for Bratwurst
So, you got yer bratwurst, huh? That’s a good start. Those things are juicy and tasty. But you need somethin’ on the side, right? Can’t just be eatin’ sausage by itself. That’s just silly. Here are my thoughts for what to serve with bratwurst.
The Best Bratwurst Side Dishes
First off, them baked beans. Oh boy, baked beans is good with anything, specially BBQ baked beans. Sweet and smoky, just like them sausages. Put a big ol’ scoop of them beans next to your bratwurst, and you got yourself a meal. And potatoes. Can’t go wrong with potatoes. Make ’em mashed, make ’em roasted, make a potato salad. Doesn’t matter. Potatoes and sausage, they go together like peas and carrots. If you want a good potato salad, try that German potato salad with them red potatoes and vinegar. It’s tangy!

- Baked Beans – sweet and smoky!
- Potato Salad – the German kind is real good!
- Mashed Potatoes – creamy and buttery!
- Roasted Potatoes – crispy and flavorful!
And then there’s cabbage. Yeah, I know, some of you young’uns turn your nose up at cabbage. But cooked right, it’s delicious. Fry it up with some onions, maybe a little bacon if you got it. That’s good eatin’. Cabbage and onions, that’s traditional, you know! And if you like that vinegar, try a cucumber salad with apple cider vinegar. It ain’t got no dairy!
More Bratwurst Sides, More Fun
And you know what else? Sauerkraut! That’s fermented cabbage, for those who ain’t in the know. It’s sour and tangy, and it cuts right through the richness of them bratwurst. Some folks like it, some don’t. But if you do, it’s a real treat. I like sauerkraut, it’s good for your gut, too, keeps things movin’, if you know what I mean. Those little sausages go well with that Irish colcannon stuff. It’s mashed potatoes and cabbage all mixed up.
Don’t forget about roast vegetables. Chop up some carrots, onions, maybe some peppers. Toss ’em with a little oil and some herbs, roast ’em in the oven till they’re soft and caramelized. That’s a good way to get your veggies in. And if you like tomatoes, roast them, too! Roast tomatoes get all sweet and juicy.
Sweet Potatoes and Other Stuff
Sweet potatoes! Now there’s somethin’ special. You can mash ’em, roast ’em, make ’em into fries. They got that sweetness that goes real nice with the savory sausage. I like to just bake ’em whole, then scoop out the insides and mash ’em up with a little butter and maybe a sprinkle of cinnamon. Oh, that’s good!

- Colcannon – Irish mashed potatoes and cabbage.
- Roast Vegetables – get your veggies!

Don’t Forget the Bread
And don’t forget the bread! You gotta have somethin’ to sop up all them juices. A good hard roll is perfect. You can even put the bratwurst right inside the roll, make yourself a little sandwich. I like to toast the roll a little, gives it a nice crunch. You need somethin’ sturdy to hold that bratwurst, a hard roll does the trick. And mustard! Can’t have bratwurst without mustard. Spicy brown mustard, yellow mustard, whatever you like. Just slather it on there.
