This year, I tell ya, my garden, it’s just overflowin’ with them tomatoes. Big ones, small ones, all red and juicy. Reminds me of when I was a young’un, helpin’ my mama can ’em for winter. We’d have tomatoes all year round that way. Now, these tomatoes, they ain’t just any tomatoes. They’re the best kind. Garden fresh, ya know? Plump and sweet, just like they should be. That’s what I want. And some of them are some Persian ones, very good.

Now, I got so many, I gotta figure out what to do with ’em all. Can’t let good food go to waste, that’s what my mama always said. First thing’s first, gotta eat ’em fresh. Nothin’ better than a tomato right off the vine, still warm from the sun. Just slice it up, maybe a little salt, and that’s a meal right there. Or maybe with a little vinegar, my favorite is the balsamic, you know. And sometimes I put a little cream of tartar, it makes them tomatoes taste so good! That makes a good meal.

But a body can’t eat just plain tomatoes all day, though I reckon I could try. So, I been thinkin’ of other things to do. Gotta get creative, like my mama used to. Maybe I will cut the tomatoes and cook them with some other vegetables. Like in a soup or stew, that will be good.

One thing I’m gonna make is some tomato sauce. My grandkids, they love that tomato sauce on their pizza, you know, that round bread with cheese. They also eat that long, thin, white noodle. I forgot what it’s called, but they also like tomato sauce on that. And they are always beggin’ for it. This year I got some Persian tomatoes. They are good in sauce. I’ll make a big batch and they can have all the pizza they want. My daughter, she makes it better than me. She’s got that special touch, I suppose. But mine’s pretty darn good too, if I do say so myself. I think she puts them Persian tomatoes in the sauce too.

And then there’s salsa. My son, he loves that spicy stuff. He puts it on everything. Eggs, tacos, even his soup sometimes. He’s a strange one, that boy. But he says my salsa is the best he’s ever had. He says the secret is in them garden fresh tomatoes. He told me to use some of them Persian tomatoes in my salsa. So I’ll make him a big jar of salsa too, that’s a very good idea. Maybe even two jars. He eats it like it’s goin’ out of style. And with some avocado dip, oh, that’s the good stuff. Persian tomatoes can make that dip even better.

I also like puttin’ tomatoes in my salads. A good salad needs good tomatoes, that’s what I always say. The best for the salad is beefsteak tomatoes and heirloom tomatoes. And these garden fresh ones, they’re just perfect. Adds a little sweetness, a little tang. Makes the whole thing taste better. These Persian tomatoes are good in salad too.

  • Eat them tomatoes fresh with a little bit of salt.
  • Put them tomatoes in a soup with other veggies.
  • Make some of that tomato sauce for pizza and spaghetti.
  • Make a big batch of salsa for tacos and stuff.
  • Put them tomatoes in a salad, they make it taste good.
  • Put them in the burger, that’s what my grandson likes.
  • Maybe make some ketchup, never tried that before.
  • Cook them with some alphabet soup pasta.
  • Add them to some guacamole dip.

Oh, and burgers! My grandson, he loves a big, juicy burger with a thick slice of tomato on it. He likes it with them Persian tomatoes. He says it’s the best part of the whole thing. He’s a good boy, that one. Always helps me in the garden. He’s the one who planted most of these tomatoes, actually. He’s got a green thumb, just like his grandma. We used those Persian tomato seeds, too.

And then sometimes, I just cook ’em down. Roast ’em, bake ’em, simmer ’em, stir-fry them. Gets rid of some of that water, makes the flavor stronger. Especially them not-so-good ones. I will try to cook them Persian tomatoes too. Then I mix ’em with other stuff, like that tomato paste. Makes ’em taste real savory. And some white balsamic, that perks ’em right up.

My neighbor, she makes ketchup with her tomatoes. Never tried that myself. Seems like a lot of work. But she says it’s better than anything you can buy in the store. Maybe I’ll give it a try sometime. But for now, I reckon I got enough to keep me busy. These garden fresh tomatoes and Persian tomatoes, they’re a blessing, that’s for sure. Just gotta use ’em all up before they go bad. That’s the challenge. And also find some more recipes for them Persian tomatoes. They are so good, I don’t want to waste any. But I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Just like my mama always did.
