Okay, here’s my blog post about dehydrator recipes, written from my personal experience:
So, I finally caved and bought a dehydrator. I’d been seeing all these amazing-looking dried fruits and veggies online, and I wanted in! My main goal? Making my own healthy snacks without all the added sugar and junk you find in store-bought stuff.
Getting Started: My First Batch of Apple Rings
I started simple: apple rings. I figured they’d be pretty hard to mess up. First things, wash them, I used about five apples from my kitchen.

I cored the apples and sliced them into rounds, maybe a quarter-inch thick? I didn’t use a fancy mandoline slicer or anything, just a regular kitchen knife. I’m all about keeping things simple, you know?
Some people like to soak their apple slices in lemon juice to prevent browning, but I honestly didn’t bother. I’m not too fussed about the color, and I figured it wouldn’t make a huge difference in taste.
The Dehydrating Process
I arranged the apple slices on the dehydrator trays, making sure they weren’t overlapping. I wanted good airflow all around.
Then, I set the dehydrator to around 135°F (that seemed to be the standard recommendation in most recipes I found). And then…I waited.
- The waiting is the hardest part! It took about 8 hours, give or take.
- I checked on them every few hours, rotating the trays a bit to make sure everything was drying evenly.
- My kitchen smelled amazing, by the way. Like warm apple pie.
The Results (and Some Lessons Learned)
Finally, the apple rings were done! They were leathery and slightly pliable, not super crispy. I let them cool completely before storing them in an airtight container.
They tasted fantastic! Sweet, a little tart, and perfectly chewy. My kids loved them too, which was a major win.
Next time, I might try slicing them a bit thinner to see if I can get them crispier. And I’m definitely going to experiment with other fruits – maybe some bananas or strawberries. I’ve even heard of people dehydrating vegetables like tomatoes and zucchini, so that’s on my list too!
All I have to say is that I succeed! I can make some healthy food for my family now!
