Okay, so the other day I was making tacos, and the recipe called for Monterey Jack cheese. Guess what? I was completely out! I really didn’t want to run to the store, so I started digging around in my fridge, thinking, “There’s gotta be something I can use instead.”
My Cheese Substitution Adventure
First, I grabbed my trusty block of cheddar. I mean, cheddar is good on everything, right? It’s sharper than Monterey Jack, for sure, but I figured it would still work. I shredded some up and gave it a taste. It was okay, but not quite the mild, creamy flavor I was going for.
Then, I spotted some mozzarella. I usually have that on hand for pizza. Mozzarella is super melty, which is a plus, but it’s also pretty bland. I considered mixing it with the cheddar, hoping to balance out the sharpness. That was a thought!

- Cheddar: Too sharp.
- Mozzarella: Too bland.
- Cheddar and Mozzarella: Better that one of them.
I also found a little bit of Colby. Colby is actually pretty similar to Monterey Jack in terms of mildness, it worked in a pinch. It melted nicely and had that creamy texture I wanted. Success!
I ended up using only * I did not want to use the Cheddar and Mozzarella.I put it on my tacos, and they were delicious! It will be my first choose if I do not have Monterey Jack cheese.
