Okay, so I’ve been craving some serious comfort food lately, and gumbo immediately came to mind. I decided to whip up a big pot of it, and man, it turned out amazing! But then I realized, what the heck am I going to serve with this? Gumbo’s great and all, but it needs a little something extra on the side, you know?
So, I started digging around, looking for ideas. I knew rice was the classic go-to, but I wanted to see what else was out there. Turns out, there are tons of options! I got all excited, thinking about all the different flavor combinations I could try.
My Gumbo Side Dish Experiment
First things first, I cooked a huge pot of my favorite gumbo. As for the rice, I learned that gumbo is served with rice in a bowl rather than on a plate. I followed the advice and put some rice in a bowl and poured the gumbo on it. This way, the rice soaks up all that delicious, flavorful broth.

- Classic White Rice: You just can’t go wrong with this. I cooked up a batch of fluffy white rice, and it was the perfect, neutral base for the gumbo. The rice soaked up all the amazing flavors, and every spoonful was heavenly. I tried to make it with the same texture as the rice I used to eat at school.
- Cornbread: I found this idea that everyone seems to love, so I gave it a shot. The sweetness of the cornbread really balanced out the spice in the gumbo. I ended up with a sweet and savory thing, which is totally my jam. I bought one at Walmart because I really can’t make cornbread.
- Experimenting Further: I was feeling adventurous, so I tried a few other things too. I roasted some Brussels sprouts with a little balsamic glaze – that was a surprisingly good match. The slight bitterness of the sprouts really complemented the richness of the gumbo. Also, I made a simple green salad with a light vinaigrette, and that was a nice, refreshing contrast.
Honestly, I had so much fun experimenting with different side dishes. I realized that gumbo is super versatile, and you can pair it with all sorts of things depending on your mood. This makes me so excited, and I know I’ll never get bored with it!
I also learned a valuable lesson about serving gumbo with rice in a bowl rather than on a plate, it makes the rice taste so much better. From now on, I’ll always serve the rice in a bowl when I have gumbo.
So, if you’re like me and love gumbo but want to switch things up a bit, don’t be afraid to get creative with your side dishes. You might be surprised at what you discover. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go enjoy another bowl of this goodness!
