So, I’ve been digging into this whole “normal breakfast in Hawaii” thing, and let me tell you, it’s a delicious rabbit hole. I mean, I love a good breakfast, who doesn’t? But the Hawaiian take on it? It’s on another level.
First off, I started with the basics, like what do people actually eat there? Turns out, there’s this thing called “Loco Moco”. Sounds funny, right? But it’s a big deal over there. We’re talking rice, a beef patty, a sunny-side-up egg, and gravy. All piled up together. That’s like a whole meal in one, and they eat it for breakfast! It was like every mom and pop shop, roadside place, they all had their own spin on it. So, naturally, I had to try making it.
I cooked up some rice, nothing fancy, just regular white rice. Then, I made a simple beef patty. I seasoned it, fried it up, and let it rest. The egg was easy, just a quick fry, sunny-side up. The gravy, though… I grabbed a packet mix because, let’s be honest, I’m not a gravy expert. Mixed that up, heated it, and then I assembled the whole thing.

Rice on the bottom, patty on top, then the egg, and finally, I drenched it all in gravy. It looked…interesting. But the taste? Oh man, it was surprisingly good! Hearty, flavorful, and definitely filling. I can see why it’s a staple there.
But that’s not all, folks. I also learned they eat stuff like French toast, pancakes, and cereal with milk. You know, the usual stuff. But I tried to get a bit fancy. I made some whole-wheat pancakes and tossed in some dried fruit. Feeling adventurous, I even added some nuts to my oatmeal.

- Oatmeal with nuts
- Loco Moco (of course!)
Other Stuff I Found
Apparently, they also have these things called “açaí bowls”. They’re like smoothie bowls but topped with all sorts of island fruits. I didn’t get around to making one of those yet, but they look amazing. And there’s something called “Hawaiian Style Breakfast Sausage Sliders.” Which sounds delish, too. So I will also have a try next time.
Honestly, exploring Hawaiian breakfast has been a blast. It’s a mix of familiar stuff and some really unique dishes. And you know what? It’s all pretty darn tasty. I’m definitely gonna keep experimenting with this. Who knows, maybe I’ll even master that gravy from scratch someday!
