So, I wanted to make some apple butter, and I saw this recipe online for Crockpot Apple Butter with Red Hots. Sounded interesting, so I gave it a shot. First, I gathered all my stuff. I had a bunch of apples from the farmer’s market, some Red Hots candies, sugar, cinnamon, and the usual spices like nutmeg and cloves. I also got my trusty crockpot out.

Getting Started

I started by peeling, coring, and chopping up all those apples. Took a while, but it was kind of relaxing, you know? Once that was done, I dumped them into the crockpot. Then, I tossed in a good amount of Red Hots candies. I was a bit skeptical about this part, but hey, gotta follow the recipe, right?

Mixing it Up

Next, I added the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. I just eyeballed the amounts, to be honest. I like my apple butter with a good kick of spice, so I went a little heavy-handed. I gave everything a good stir to make sure the apples were coated evenly with the spices and Red Hots.

Slow Cooking

I set the crockpot to high and let it do its thing. The recipe said to cook it for about 12-18 hours, or even longer. I checked on it every few hours, giving it a stir now and then. The smell in my kitchen was amazing – like apple pie and cinnamon candy all mixed together.

Waiting Game

It definitely took longer than I expected. After about 15 hours, it still wasn’t quite the consistency I wanted. So, I just let it keep cooking. I think it ended up being closer to 20 hours total. Patience is key with slow cooking, I guess.

The Result

Finally, it was done! The apple butter was thick, smooth, and had this beautiful deep red color from the Red Hots. I let it cool down a bit and then transferred it to some jars. I couldn’t wait to try it, so I spread some on a piece of toast.

  • Appearance: Deep red, smooth texture
  • Smell: Strong apple and cinnamon candy aroma
  • Taste: Sweet, spicy, with a hint of that cinnamon candy flavor

Man, it was good! The Red Hots added a unique twist to the classic apple butter flavor. It was sweet, spicy, and had that little bit of heat. Definitely a fun and different way to make apple butter. I’ll probably try it again, maybe with a different kind of candy next time. Who knows, right?
