Okay, so I wanted to figure out how much tri-tip I needed for my weekend barbecue. It’s always a guessing game, right? You don’t want to run out of food, but you also don’t want a mountain of leftovers.
I started poking around online. A basic guideline, I found that said to figure about 1/4 pound of cooked tri-tip per person if you’ve got a bunch of other stuff – like, a ton of sides or if you’re also grilling up some chicken or something. If the tri-tip is going to be the star of the show, though, you wanna bump that up to at least 1/2 pound per person.
So, here’s what I did:

- Made a guest list: I figured out exactly who was coming, adults and kids.
- Decided on sides: I planned a big salad, some roasted potatoes, and grilled corn. So, a decent amount of sides, but the tri-tip was the main thing.
- Calculated the amount for per one: For person who eat a lot, I give him 1/2, for kids I give them 1/4.
- Did some math: Because I had a mix of sides and wanted the tri-tip to be the focus, I figured a bit more.
- Bought the tri-tip: I went to my local butcher. It’s always better to get it fresh!
- Cooked it up: I grilled it to medium-rare.
The result? It worked out pretty great! Everyone had enough, and there was a little bit leftover, which was perfect for sandwiches the next day. I think the key is just thinking about your specific situation – how hungry your guests are, what else you’re serving, and how much you love tri-tip!
