Okay, so I decided to make some cookies today. Not just any cookies, mind you, but the “Crisco ultimate chocolate chip cookie” that I saw people were talking about online. I was a bit curious, to be honest. I’ve always used butter in my cookies, and the idea of using shortening instead was new to me.
I started by gathering all the stuff I needed. Flour, sugar, eggs, the usual suspects. Then, instead of grabbing my usual butter, I got this tub of butter flavored Crisco shortening. I measured it out, just like I would with butter, and tossed it in the bowl with some brown sugar and milk. I mixed it all up until it was nice and smooth.
Then I mixed in the dry ingredients. Flour, baking soda, salt – you know the drill. I made sure to mix it just enough, cause overmixing is a big no-no. After that, in went the chocolate chips. I may have added a few extra because, well, who doesn’t love extra chocolate chips?
I spooned the dough onto a baking sheet, making sure to leave some space between each blob. Into the oven they went. I kept an eye on them, cause I didn’t want them to burn. It took about 10 minutes at 375 degrees, and I got to say the kitchen smelled amazing.
When they were done, I pulled them out and let them cool for a bit. Now, I was really interested to see how these cookies would turn out. Would they be super different from my usual butter cookies?
The verdict? They were actually pretty good! They had this crispy edge, but the inside was still soft and chewy. I read online that shortening can make cookies crispier on the outside and chewier on the inside. They also seemed a bit taller than my butter cookies. It’s like the shortening helped them hold their shape better or something.
- Crispy on the outside.
- Chewy on the inside.
- Taller than butter cookies.
I guess using butter would have given them a richer taste, but these Crisco cookies were still delicious. It was a fun little experiment, and I’m glad I tried it. Maybe I’ll try swapping out butter for shortening in other recipes too. Who knows what other baking magic I might discover?
Final thoughts?
Not bad, Crisco, not bad. If you are looking to switch things up and want some cookies that are crispy and chewy, give this a try.
