How many cups in a pound of chocolate chips? We have the simple answer.

So, the other day I was in my kitchen, about to make some of my famous chocolate chip cookies. I pulled out my ingredients, but then I faced a head-scratcher. My recipe calls for a pound of chocolate chips, but I like to measure stuff out in cups ’cause it’s just easier for me to eyeball. I stared at that bag of chocolate chips and thought, “How many cups are in this thing?”

I could have just dumped the whole bag into a measuring cup, but where’s the fun in that? Plus, I didn’t want to end up with a mountain of cookies, even though that sounds kind of awesome. So, I decided to figure this out the smart way.

First, I grabbed my phone and started poking around the internet. Of course, I saw a bunch of different answers. Some folks said it was about 2 cups, others said closer to 2.5. I even saw one that said 4 cups! That seemed like a lot, so I took that one with a grain of salt.

But then I found a couple of sources that seemed to know their stuff. They said that 1 cup of regular-sized chocolate chips is about 6 ounces. That made sense to me. So, if a pound is 16 ounces, then that means 1 pound should be roughly 2.67 cups.

I decided to test it out. I grabbed my trusty kitchen scale and a measuring cup. I zeroed out the scale with the cup on it, then started scooping in chocolate chips. I filled the cup to the brim, making sure it was level. Then I checked the weight. Lo and behold, it was right around 6 ounces! I did this a couple more times, just to be sure, and it was pretty consistent.

So, there you have it. From my little kitchen experiment, I found that there are about 2.67 cups in a pound of chocolate chips. It might be a bit different if you’ve got those giant chocolate chunks or those tiny mini-chips, but for regular ones, 2.67 is a good number to go with.
