Okay, so I decided to make that cranberry relish with orange, you know, the one from Ocean Spray. I’ve always seen it around during the holidays, but never gave it a shot myself. Figured it was time to change that.
First off, I had to gather up all the stuff I needed. I grabbed a bag of fresh cranberries from the store, a couple of juicy oranges, some sugar, and that’s about it. I think I had some cinnamon sticks somewhere in the pantry, but that was optional, so I didn’t sweat it too much.
I started by washing the cranberries and the oranges. Gotta get rid of any dirt or whatever, right? Then, I zested one of the oranges. Basically, I just used a grater to scrape off the outer part of the orange peel. It smelled amazing, by the way. After that, I peeled both oranges and chopped them up into smaller pieces. They were super juicy, so it was a bit of a mess, but I managed.

Next, I tossed the cranberries, chopped oranges, and orange zest into a saucepan. I added about a cup of sugar, but you can totally adjust that depending on how sweet you like your relish. I like mine a little tart, so I didn’t go overboard with the sugar.
- I put the saucepan on the stove over medium heat and let it do its thing.
- I stirred it occasionally, just to make sure nothing was sticking to the bottom.
- After about 10 minutes, the cranberries started to pop and the mixture got all thick and bubbly.
- That’s when I knew it was almost done.
Cooking time!
I let the mixture simmer for another 5 minutes or so, just to make sure it was nice and thick. I tasted a little bit and decided it needed just a touch more sugar, so I added a bit more and stirred it in. Once I was happy with the taste, I took the saucepan off the heat and let it cool down. It’s important to let it cool completely, because the relish thickens up as it cools.
After it cooled down, I transferred the relish to a bowl and popped it in the fridge. I figured it would be even better after chilling for a few hours. And guess what? I was right! The flavors really melded together and it was so good.
Honestly, this was way easier than I thought it would be. And the taste? So much better than the canned stuff. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and tart, and the orange adds such a nice, bright flavor. Definitely adding this to my holiday recipe list from now on. I think I might even try adding some nuts or maybe some spices next time, just to experiment a bit. Anyone got any suggestions?
