Okay, here’s my post about that ham, green bean, and potato recipe I tried in my slow cooker:
So the other day I was looking for something simple to make for dinner. I had some leftover ham in the fridge, and I figured I should use it up. I also had a bag of fresh green beans and a few potatoes lying around. I remembered seeing a recipe online somewhere that used all these things in a crock pot, so I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”
First, I washed the green beans and snapped off the ends. I’m not a fan of those stringy bits, you know? Then I grabbed the potatoes – just regular russet ones – and washed and scrubbed them. I decided not to peel them because I like the skin and it’s, like, extra fiber or something. I cut them into chunks, maybe about an inch or so. Not too big, not too small.
Next, I took that ham out of the fridge. It was already cooked, one of those spiral-cut ones. I just cut off a few big chunks. Enough for a couple of meals, I’d say.
Then came the fun part – throwing everything into the crock pot! I put the potatoes on the bottom, then the green beans, and then the ham on top. I also poured in some chicken broth, I think about a couple of cups, just enough to almost cover everything.
I sprinkled in some salt and pepper, and just for kicks, a little bit of garlic powder. I’m a simple guy, I don’t like my food too complicated. I put the lid on the slow cooker, set it to low, and walked away.
- Wash and trim green beans
- Wash and chop potatoes
- Cut ham into chunks
- Combine all ingredients in the slow cooker
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours
I think I let it cook for about, oh, 6 or 7 hours? I wasn’t really paying attention. I just went about my day, did some work, watched some TV, the usual. When I finally remembered about dinner, the whole house smelled amazing!
The Result
I opened the lid and, man, it looked so good! The potatoes were all soft and tender, the green beans were cooked just right, not all mushy, and the ham was heated through and smelled delicious. I scooped some out onto a plate and dug in.
It was seriously one of the easiest and tastiest meals I’ve made in a while. Everything was cooked perfectly, and the flavors all melded together really well. It was like comfort food but, you know, not too heavy. And clean up? A breeze! Just the one pot to wash. This one is a keeper for sure, I would definitely make it again!
