Okay, so yesterday I was craving something chocolatey and decadent, but I also wanted something, like, easy. Then I remembered this German Chocolate Poke Cake recipe I’d seen, and it seemed like the perfect solution. I’m all about shortcuts, so using a box mix and Cool Whip? Sign me up!
Getting Started
First, I grabbed a box of German chocolate cake mix – you know, the kind you just add water, oil, and eggs to. I dumped that into a big bowl. Then i added all stuff that box said.
I whisked everything together until it was nice and smooth, no lumps allowed! Then I poured the batter into a 9×13 inch baking pan that I’d already greased and floured. You could use that baking spray stuff too, I guess.

Bake and Poke
I popped the pan into the oven, which I’d preheated to 350 degrees. The box said to bake it for, like, 28-32 minutes, but I always start checking a little early. You know how ovens can be.
While the cake was baking, I got to work on the fun part – the poking! I found a wooden spoon with a nice, round handle. When the cake tester came out clean, I pulled the cake out of the oven and let it cool for just a few minutes.
Then, I went to town! I poked holes all over that warm cake, making sure to get them evenly spaced. This is where the magic happens, people.
The Gooey Goodness
Okay, so for the topping, I cheated again. I grabbed a can of coconut pecan frosting – you know, the classic German chocolate frosting. I scooped the frosting into a microwave-safe bowl and zapped it for maybe 30 seconds, just until it was pourable, not super hot.
Carefully, I poured the warmed frosting all over the cake, making sure it seeped into all those glorious holes I’d made.
Cool Whip Finish
Finally, I spread a whole container of thawed Cool Whip over the top. I mean, you could make your own whipped cream, but… why? Cool Whip is just so easy and fluffy. I try add some chocolate bar and nuts to the top, and it seems like a good idea.
Chill and Enjoy!
I covered the cake with plastic wrap and stuck it in the fridge for at least a couple of hours. This lets all the flavors meld together, and the cake gets even more moist and delicious.

And that’s it! Seriously, this cake is SO good, and it’s ridiculously easy to make. It’s perfect for a potluck or a weeknight treat. You should totally try it!
