Hey everyone, today I wanted to share a little experiment I did in my kitchen. I was baking a batch of cookies the other day, and I got curious about something really simple: how many chocolate chips are actually in a tablespoon? It sounds silly, but sometimes you just get random thoughts while you’re doing stuff, right?
So, I grabbed my bag of Nestle chocolate chips and a tablespoon. First, I tried to just eyeball it and scoop some chips into the spoon. That was kind of messy, and I realized the number could totally change depending on how I scooped them. I wanted to be a bit more accurate.
My Little Experiment
- First Attempt: I tried scooping normally, like I do when I follow recipes. But chocolate chips just kept falling out and didn’t seem to fit.
- Second Attempt: So then I tried to see how many tablespoons it takes to fill up a whole cup with these chips. I knew that a cup contains 16 tablespoons, so I counted out 16 spoonfuls into a measuring cup. The result wasn’t very satisfying, as the count seemed unreliable since there was so much empty space between the chocolate chips.
- Third Attempt: I carefully placed the chocolate chips into the tablespoon one by one, trying to fill up all the space. I counted each one as I went. It took a while, but I finally got the tablespoon filled up.
You won’t believe what I found out! In my tablespoon, I managed to fit roughly 40 chocolate chips, give or take. Of course, this probably changes if you use different brands or sizes of chocolate chips, but for my regular Nestle ones, it was about 40. I was pretty surprised it was that many! I always thought it would be way less, but I didn’t expect there to be this many. But then again, there are different sizes of chocolate chips. And there is the space between the chips that you need to consider.

Honestly, it wasn’t the most scientific experiment in the world. I’m sure there’s a more precise way to measure this, but it was fun to try. Plus, it gave me a new appreciation for just how much chocolate goes into my cookie recipes. I’m gonna have to try this again and be even more careful with the counting. Maybe I’ll even try different brands just for kicks.
Anyway, I thought I’d share my little kitchen adventure with you all. Maybe next time you’re baking, you’ll find yourself wondering the same thing. If you decide to try this out yourself, let me know what you find! I’d love to hear if your results are similar or totally different.
