Alright, let’s talk about this salsa mango habanero for wings, or whatever you call it. My neighbor’s kid showed me this thing on the internet, some fancy word, “receta.” Sounds like “reset-ah” to me. Anyway, it’s supposed to make your wings taste good. I ain’t no chef, but I can sure make things taste alright, you know, good enough to eat, that is.
First off, you gotta get yourself some mangoes. Now, make sure they ain’t too hard, you know? Gotta be a little soft, like a ripe peach. And you need those little habanero peppers. Them things are hot, real hot, like a firecracker in your mouth. So be careful, unless you like your mouth burning, then go ahead, load ‘em up.
So you take them mangoes, and you peel ‘em. Don’t need no fancy peeler, just use a knife, carefully though, don’t want you cutting your fingers off. Then you chop ‘em up, not too big, not too small, just right, like you’re chopping potatoes for stew. Throw them mango chunks into a bowl, a big one, you gonna need the space.
Now for the hot stuff, the habaneros. I wear gloves for this, learned that the hard way, let me tell you. My hands were burning for hours last time. You chop them little peppers up too, but real fine, like tiny little bits. You don’t want no big chunks of habanero, unless you want to be breathing fire later on.
- Mangoes – Gotta be ripe and sweet.
- Habaneros – Handle with care, these are hot!
- Onion – A little bit for flavor.
- Lime juice – Makes it tangy.
- Salt – Just a pinch, or however much you like.
After the habaneros, I chop up a little bit of onion. Just a small one, don’t need too much. Onion makes everything taste better, you know? Then I throw that in with the mangoes and habaneros.
Now, for the juice. You gotta have some lime juice. Squeeze them limes good, get all that juice out. Lime juice makes it tangy, balances out the sweet mango and the hot habanero. Pour that juice over everything in the bowl.
And don’t forget the salt! Everything needs a little salt. Just a pinch, or two, or however much you like. You can always add more later, but you can’t take it out, so be careful.
Then you mix it all up. I use a spoon, but you can use whatever you got. Mix it good, make sure everything is all mixed together. And that’s pretty much it, this salsa mango thingy. You can put it on your wings, or whatever you want. My neighbor’s kid says you gotta “make sure you get that sauce all over them wings, every nook and cranny”. He’s a city boy, talks funny. But he’s right, gotta get that sauce everywhere.
Some folks like to add other stuff, you know, like cilantro or garlic. But I keep it simple. Ain’t got time for all that fancy stuff. Just mangoes, habaneros, onion, lime juice, and salt. That’s all you need.
And remember, don’t go crazy with the habaneros. Start with a little, and if you want it hotter, you can always add more. You don’t want to make it so hot that you can’t eat it. Unless you’re one of them folks who likes to sweat while they eat. To each their own, I guess.
Now, this salsa ain’t just for wings. You can put it on chicken, pork, fish, even just chips. It’s good on everything. Makes everything taste better, even that dry old chicken you been keeping in the freezer for six months. Don’t look at me like that, I know you got some old chicken in there too.
And that’s all there is to it. Simple as that. No fancy cooking skills needed. Just a few ingredients, a little bit of chopping, and a whole lot of flavor. Now go on and make some salsa. And don’t be shy with the mangoes. Mangoes are good for you. And if you mess it up, don’t worry about it. It’ll still taste better than nothing.
