Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “5 layer bars” all over Pinterest and decided, you know what? I’m gonna make them. I’m no pro baker, just someone who likes messing around in the kitchen, so don’t expect any fancy chef stuff here.
Getting Started
First, I grabbed all the stuff I needed. And honestly, it wasn’t much. Here’s the rundown:
- Graham crackers – I used the honey kind, because, why not?
- Butter – The real stuff, unsalted.
- Sweetened condensed milk – This is the magic glue, people.
- Chocolate chips – Semi-sweet, because I like that balance.
- Butterscotch chips – These are kinda underrated, in my opinion.
- Shredded coconut – Sweetened, because… dessert!
- Chopped nuts – I went with pecans, but walnuts would be good too.
The Crumbly Base
I started by smashing those graham crackers into crumbs. I just put them in a big Ziploc bag and went at it with a rolling pin. It’s kinda therapeutic, actually. Then, I melted the butter in a saucepan – low heat, don’t want to burn it! – and mixed it with the crumbs. This is your base, so press it firmly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking pan. I lined mine with parchment paper first, for easy removal later.

Layering It Up
This is the fun part. I poured that glorious sweetened condensed milk all over the crust, making sure it was evenly coated. Next, I sprinkled on the chocolate chips, then the butterscotch chips, followed by the coconut, and finally, the chopped pecans. Just scattered them all over, no need to be precise.
Baking and (Im)patiently Waiting
Into the oven it went! I baked it at 350°F (175°C) for about 25-30 minutes. You want the edges to be golden brown and the coconut to be nicely toasted. The hardest part? Letting it cool completely. Seriously, this is torture. But trust me, it’s worth it. Warm, gooey bars are good, but cooled and set bars are way better for cutting.
The Sweet, Sweet Result
Once they were cool, I lifted them out of the pan using the parchment paper – lifesaver! – and cut them into squares. And… wow. Just wow. Sweet, chewy, crunchy, chocolatey, butterscotchy… all the good things. They’re seriously addictive. I had to hide some from myself so I wouldn’t eat them all in one sitting. My first time making, and, Success!
