Okay, so I’ve been trying to watch what I eat lately, and breakfast is always a bit of a puzzle for me. I love a good hotcake, but those things can be calorie bombs! So, I started experimenting with oatmeal hotcakes because, you know, oatmeal is supposed to be healthy and all that. But then I got to thinking, how many calories are actually in these things?
First, I gathered my ingredients. I’m not much of a chef, so I kept it simple: rolled oats, a bit of milk, an egg, and some baking powder. I figured that’s the basic stuff, right? I tossed the oats into my blender to make it more like flour. This took a while cause my blender is pretty old, but it worked!
Then I mixed the dry and wet ingredients. I cooked them on a pan with a tiny bit of oil. I mean, they looked like regular hotcakes, just a bit denser. I made a small batch, just three little hotcakes, to test it out.

- Rolled Oats: 1 cup (I read somewhere that this is about 150-160 calories)
- Milk: Just a splash, maybe 1/4 cup? (Probably not many calories there, like 30?)
- Egg: 1 (These are about 70 calories each, I think)
- Baking Powder: Just a teaspoon (I doubt this has any significant calories)
After I cooked them, I was curious, so I did some quick searching. I found a bunch of websites with calorie calculators and some that just straight-up gave calorie counts for oatmeal. It was all a bit confusing, to be honest. One said 407 calories for a piece of oatmeal cake with icing, but mine didn’t have icing. Another said 154 calories for a cup of cooked oatmeal, but I was making hotcakes, not just a bowl of oatmeal.
Then, I did some math. Adding up the calories I knew: 160 (oats) + 30 (milk) + 70 (egg) = 260. I did divide it by three because I made three hotcakes. 260 divided by 3 is around 87 calories. So, each of my little hotcakes was probably a bit under 90 calories. Not too bad, I guess! I did read that 1 cup of cooked oatmeal has about 145 calories, so my hotcakes were close to that, give or take.
So, here’s what I figured out: a plain oatmeal hotcake, made with the simple stuff I used, is probably around 90-100 calories. Of course, it depends on the size and exactly what you put in it. I’m pretty happy with that. It’s a filling breakfast, and it doesn’t feel like I’m totally blowing my calorie budget first thing in the morning. I put some berries on top of mine, and it was pretty good! I might try adding some cinnamon next time.
Anyway, I just thought I’d share my little experiment. It’s not rocket science, but it helped me understand a bit more about what I’m eating. Hope this helps someone out there who’s also trying to figure out the whole healthy breakfast thing!
