Okay, so I’ve been seeing these pineapple upside-down cakes all over the internet, and they look super yummy. But I’m no baker, and I don’t even have an oven! Then I thought, why not try it in my air fryer? I mean, I use that thing for everything these days. It saves me so much time, and honestly, my electric bill has never looked better. Seriously, I love my air fryer and today, I decided to make a pineapple upside-down cake using it.

I looked up some recipes, and most of them were for regular ovens. So, I just grabbed one and figured I’d wing it with the air fryer settings. I have a medium-sized air fryer, I think it’s about 4 quarts? I don’t know exactly. It’s perfect for my little family of three. We usually use it for chicken, fries, and other simple stuff.

First, I melted some butter in a small cake pan that fits perfectly inside my air fryer basket. Then I sprinkled some brown sugar over the melted butter. I love the caramelization that happens when butter and brown sugar come together. Next, I arranged pineapple slices on top of the sugar mixture and placed a maraschino cherry in the center of each slice. It looked so pretty already!

For the cake batter, I just used a boxed yellow cake mix because, like I said, I’m not a baker. I mixed it up according to the box instructions and poured it over the pineapples in the pan. It was a bit tricky not to disturb the pineapple arrangement, but I managed.

Now for the air frying part. This is where I was just guessing. I set my air fryer to 320°F (160°C) and put the cake pan in. I figured lower and slower was the way to go since air fryers cook faster than ovens. It was kind of a trial-and-error. I checked it after 20 minutes, and it was still pretty jiggly. I gave it another 10 minutes, and then another 5.

  • First 20 minutes: still jiggly.
  • After 10 more minutes: Getting there.
  • After 5 more minutes: Golden and done!

Finally, after about 35 minutes total, I took it out. The toothpick test came out clean, so that was a good sign. I let it cool for a few minutes, then I flipped it onto a plate. It slid right out, and oh my goodness, it looked amazing! The pineapple and cherries were all caramelized and beautiful. I mean, the Ninja Combi and Ninja Speedi get a lot of hype but I feel that this regular guy worked just as fine for this baking.

We dug in while it was still warm, and it was delicious! The cake was moist, and the pineapple topping was sweet and tangy. It was a total win! I’m so glad I tried this experiment. I might try making different variations like using different fruits, or maybe even spices in the batter. I may even get a bigger air fryer, maybe the 10-QT one so that I can make a bigger cake for my friends who are coming over for dinner next week. I love the multi-cooker all-in-one option. I will need to look into that. My family is so impressed with my air fryer baking skills. It’s so easy; anyone can do it!
