Okay, so the other day, I decided to tackle a tri-tip roast. I’ve cooked them before, but I always kinda winged it when it came to figuring out how much to buy. This time, I wanted to be a bit more precise, you know, actually plan it out. So I did some digging, and here’s what I found and how I did it.
Figuring Out the Right Amount
First, I had to think about who I was cooking for. It was just going to be me, my wife, and our two teenage boys. Those boys eat like there’s no tomorrow, seriously. I figured my wife and I would have normal portions, but I needed to account for the bottomless pits I call sons.
I saw online that you should plan for about 1/2 pound per adult. But that didn’t seem like enough for my boys, so I bumped it up to 3/4 pound for each of them.

- Me: 1/2 pound
- Wife: 1/2 pound
- Son #1: 3/4 pound
- Son #2: 3/4 pound
That added up to 2.5 pounds total. But, I also know that meat shrinks when it cooks. So, to be safe, I decided to add a little extra, went up the meat amount in the shop.
The Actual Shopping
At the store, I found a good-looking tri-tip roast that was about 3 pounds. Perfect! It was a bit more than my initial calculation, but I figured it was better to have some leftovers than to run out of food. I mean, who doesn’t love leftover tri-tip sandwiches? I also use these meat for the next meal, I mean, add them into my salad!
Cooking and Serving
I cooked the tri-tip to medium-rare, let it rest, and then sliced it up. Turns out, I was pretty spot on with my calculations. Everyone had plenty to eat, and we even had some leftovers, just like I planned. The boys crushed their portions, my wife and I had just the amount of meat we needed, and everything was delicious.
So that is how much meat I have bought for my cooking!
