Okay, so the other day I was craving a snack, something more than just chips, but not quite a full meal. I stumbled upon this thing called “Texas Trash,” and let me tell you, it sounded right up my alley. A mix of cereals, pretzels, nuts, and a buttery, savory coating? Yes, please!
So, I decided to give it a shot. First, I gathered all my ingredients. This is where you can get creative, really. I used:
- Chex cereal (both rice and corn)
- Wheat Thins
- Pretzel sticks
- Mixed nuts (because that’s what I had)
- Butter (of course!)
- Worcestershire sauce
- Seasoned salt
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
First, I preheated my oven to 250°F. Low and slow is the key, I figured, to get everything nice and toasty without burning it.

Then, I grabbed a HUGE bowl. Seriously, the biggest one I could find. I dumped in all the cereals, Wheat Thins, pretzels, and nuts. I gave it a good toss, just to mix everything up evenly.
Making the Sauce
Next up, the magic sauce. In a separate, smaller bowl, I melted a whole stick of butter. I mean, it’s “trash,” right? Gotta go all in! Once it was melted, I whisked in a few good shakes of Worcestershire sauce, a generous sprinkle of seasoned salt, and a bit of garlic powder and onion powder. I didn’t measure anything precisely, just went with my gut.
I poured the buttery mixture all over the cereal mix, and then, using my hands (the best tools!), I gently tossed and turned everything until it was all nicely coated. It’s a bit messy, but that’s part of the fun.
I spread the mixture out onto two large baking sheets. I wanted a single layer so everything would cook evenly. Then, into the oven they went!
I baked it for about an hour, stirring it every 15 minutes or so. This is important! You want to make sure everything gets crispy and golden brown, not burnt. My kitchen started to smell amazing, all buttery and savory.
Once it was done, I took it out of the oven and let it cool completely on the baking sheets. This is crucial because it gets even crispier as it cools. It’s hard to resist, but trust me, it’s worth the wait.
Finally, I transferred it all to a big container. And there you have it – my homemade Texas Trash! It’s the perfect snack for movie nights, game days, or just whenever you’re feeling a little peckish. It’s crunchy, salty, savory, and totally addictive. Give it a try, I think you’ll like it!
