Alright, let’s talk about this here strawberry thingy pie, yeah, the one with that sweet milk stuff. My old man, he used to love this kind of pie, always said it was the best thing since sliced bread, not that we had much sliced bread back then, mind you.

First off, you gotta get yourself some strawberries. Now, don’t go buying those fancy, perfect-looking ones from the store. The ones from the farmer’s market, a little banged up, those are the ones with the flavor, you know? Like them berries we used to pick in the fields, all sun-warmed and juicy. Wash ‘em good, though. Don’t want no dirt in your pie, that’s for sure.

Then comes the sweet milk part. Now, you can buy that stuff in a can, but I always like to make it myself, if I got the time. It ain’t hard, see? Just milk and sugar, cooked down real slow. My grandma used to say, “low and slow is the way to go,” and she was right about most things, especially cookin’. You need about three cups of milk for every cup of sugar. Cook it ‘til it gets thick and creamy, like, you know, kinda like honey, but not quite. It takes a while, but it’s worth it. This milk, it’s sweeter than a baby’s smile, gotta be careful not to use too much, or your teeth will fall right out!

For the crust, well, I ain’t no fancy baker. I use those ready-made crusts from the store. They work just fine, and saves a whole heap of trouble. But if you’re feeling fancy, you can make your own. Flour, butter, little bit of water… it’s a whole thing. I ain’t got time for that, not with the chickens to feed and the garden to weed. My joints ain’t what they used to be, you know.

So, you got your berries, you got your sweet milk, you got your crust. Now, what? Well, you put them berries in the crust, see? Nice and even, not too crowded. Then, you pour that sweet milk all over them berries. Don’t be shy, now. Let it soak in, get all nice and gooey. Some folks like to add a little bit of lemon juice, too, give it a little zing. I never did, myself. Always liked it sweet and simple.

  • Get them strawberries, wash ’em good.
  • Make the sweet milk, low and slow.
  • Use a store-bought crust, unless you’re feelin’ fancy.
  • Put berries in crust, pour milk over berries.

Then, you stick it in the oven, bake it ‘til the crust is golden brown and the berries are bubbly. How long? Well, it depends on your oven. Mine, it’s kinda old and temperamental. I just keep an eye on it, you know? Smell it, too. When it smells like pie, it’s probably done. Let it cool before you eat it, though. That sweet milk, it gets hotter than the devil’s pitchfork. Burned my tongue more times than I can count.

And that’s it. Strawberry sweetened condensed milk pie. Easy as pie, as they say. My grandkids, they love it. Always asking for it when they come to visit. Makes an old woman feel good, you know, to see them happy faces. It ain’t nothin’ fancy, just good, honest food. The kind that fills your belly and warms your heart. Now, go on and make yourself a pie. You won’t regret it.

You can even put some of that sweet milk in your coffee, too, if you want. Or on top of some biscuits. Heck, you can put it on just about anything. It’s that good. Just don’t tell the doctor I told you. He’d have a fit, talkin’ about sugar and whatnot. Sometimes, a little sweetness is all you need, you know? Makes life a little bit better, a little bit sweeter.

And if you are lucky to have lots of strawberries, maybe you can try to make some jam, or even ice cream, if you have them ice cream maker thingamajigs. But for me, nothing beats a good old fashioned pie.
