Okay, so I’ve been seeing ouzo cocktails all over my social media feeds lately, and they looked so refreshing, I just had to try making some at home. I’m no bartender, but I love a good, simple drink, and these seemed right up my alley.

First Attempts: Keep it Simple, Stupid!

I started with the most basic thing I could find – basically just ouzo and water. I grabbed a bottle of ouzo (didn’t even look at the brand, to be honest) and some ice.

  • I filled a glass with ice.
  • I poured in some ouzo – maybe a shot or two? I didn’t measure, just eyeballed it.
  • Then I topped it off with cold water.

And… wow, that milky, cloudy transformation is pretty cool to watch! The taste? Straight-up licorice. It was strong, but refreshing, especially with the ice. I could see myself sipping this on a hot day.

Getting a Little Fancier

After that, I wanted to try something a bit more “cocktail-y.” I did some Googling found a recipe that called for lemon, so I was I figured, why not.

  • Again, I filled a glass with ice.
  • Poured in the ouzo.
  • This time, I squeezed in the juice of like, half a lemon.
  • Added a splash of water.
  • I even tossed in a lemon slice to make it look pretty.

This was definitely better! The lemon cut through the strong licorice flavor and made it much more balanced. It was still very ouzo-forward, but in a good way. I think I added a tiny bit of sugar, too, just to take the edge off the lemon.

Experimenting with Sweetness

Then I have a little bit of sweet, and the ouzo with lemon were delicious. But I thought about the sweetness may make it more flavorful.

  • I put some ice into the glass.
  • Poured in the ouzo.
  • squeezed half a lemon.
  • Added a little bit of water.
  • put some sugar and mixed.

It taste good, so I think next time I have drink like this again, I will add some sprite, It may taste better.

Final Thoughts (For Now!)

I’m definitely not done experimenting. I’m thinking of trying it with some mint next time, or maybe even a splash of something bubbly like club soda. I’m also realizing that the kind of ouzo probably matters – I’m going to try a different brand next time I’m at the store. But for a first try, I’m pretty happy with my ouzo adventures! It’s a surprisingly versatile drink, and super easy to play around with.
