Okay, folks, let’s dive into making some Starbucks-style cake pops, specifically the chocolate ones. I’ve always loved these things, but my wallet, not so much. So, I decided to try making them myself, and let me tell you, it was a bit of an adventure!
Getting Started
First, I grabbed a box of chocolate cake mix – the cheap kind, because, hey, we’re experimenting here. I followed the instructions on the box and baked the cake. Make sure your cake cooked totally. Then use a fork or a big spoon, I crumbled the whole thing up in a big bowl. It felt kind of wrong, destroying a perfectly good cake, but trust the process!
Mixing it Up
Next, I took about half a can of chocolate frosting (again, the cheap stuff) and mixed it into the crumbled cake. I used my hands, because it’s just easier. You want it to be like a dough, not too wet, not too dry. Just enough to hold its shape when you roll it.

Rolling Time
Then came the fun part – rolling the mixture into little balls. I aimed for about an inch in diameter, but honestly, some were bigger, some were smaller. It’s all good. I placed these balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Chill Out
Once I had all my balls rolled out, I stuck the whole tray in the freezer. This is super important, because it helps them firm up so they don’t fall apart when you dip them. I left them in there for at least 20 minutes, maybe longer because I got distracted by a TV show.
Melting Chocolate
While the cake balls were chilling, I melted some chocolate. I used those candy melts you can get at the craft store. I put that and some shortening into the bowl, and then heat that in the microwave. You gotta do it in short bursts, like 30 seconds at a time, and stir it in between, otherwise, the chocolate can burn.
The Dip
After the chocolate to work with, I took my cake balls out of the freezer. I stuck a lollipop stick into each one, then dipped them into the melted chocolate. I swirled them around to make sure they were completely covered.
Finishing Touches
- I let the excess chocolate drip off.
- Then, I placed it in the styrofoam block to stay.
And there you have it! Homemade chocolate cake pops. They might not look exactly like Starbucks, but they taste pretty darn good. And honestly, the whole process was kind of fun, even if it was a bit messy. Enjoy!
