Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another one of my cooking adventures. Today, I tried making Bruce’s candied yams with marshmallows. I saw this can in the store, and the label got me curious, so I thought, why not give it a shot? I’ve heard folks talk about this for years, especially around the holidays.
First, I got the can of Bruce’s Yams. Then, I grabbed some brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and of course, a bag of marshmallows. I also remembered some people talked about cloves and allspice, but I didn’t have those on hand. Might try adding them next time.
I opened the can and drained the yams. Then I took a fork and started mashing them up in a big bowl. I ain’t gonna lie, it took some time to get them all mashed up nicely. After that, I mixed in the brown sugar and made sure it was all blended in. It started smelling pretty good at this point.

Next, I tossed in a good chunk of butter and sprinkled in some cinnamon. I gave it all another good mix, making sure everything was combined real well. The kitchen started to smell like a holiday, I swear.
I put all that yummy mixture into a baking dish. Then came the fun part – I topped the whole thing with a layer of marshmallows. I spread them out evenly, covering every bit of the yam mixture.
I preheated my oven, then slid the dish in. Now, I don’t remember exactly how long I baked it, but I kept an eye on it. You wanna bake it until the marshmallows get all golden brown and gooey. That’s when you know it’s ready, man.
When it was done, I pulled it out and let it cool down a bit. I couldn’t wait to dig in. And let me tell you, it was pretty darn good! Sweet, buttery, with that nice cinnamon kick. The marshmallows on top were all melty and perfect.
My Final Thoughts
- Taste: Sweet and satisfying, definitely a comfort food.
- Texture: Soft yams with gooey, slightly crispy marshmallows.
- Effort: Pretty easy, especially since it’s from a can. Mashing took the longest.
I’d definitely make this again, maybe around Thanksgiving or Christmas. Might even try to make it from scratch with fresh sweet potatoes next time, just to see how it compares. If you’re looking for a simple, sweet side dish, give this one a try. It’s a classic for a reason, folks!
