Okay, so I’ve been on this baking kick lately, right? And I keep running into this same problem with recipes – they’ll list chocolate chips in cups, but I like to be precise, so I weigh everything. It’s just more consistent, you know?
So, I finally decided to figure out, once and for all, how many ounces are actually in a cup of chocolate chips. No more guessing!
My Little Experiment
First, I grabbed my trusty kitchen scale. Gotta have that. Then, I found my usual bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips – the standard size, nothing fancy.

I zeroed out the scale with an empty measuring cup on it. This is important, so you’re only weighing the chips, not the cup itself.
Next, I carefully filled the measuring cup to the very top with chocolate chips, making sure it was level. No heaping mounds or anything. I used a spoon to put the chips in, and take some chips out. I wanted it to be exact.
Then, I took a look at the scale. Boom – 6 ounces. Right there, plain as day.
-
I did this a couple more times, just to be sure. I emptied the cup, refilled it, weighed it again.
-
Same result every time: 6 ounces.
So, there you have it. In my kitchen, with my chocolate chips, one cup equals 6 ounces. Now, keep in mind, this might vary a tiny bit depending on the brand of chips or how tightly you pack them, but for all my baking purposes, 6 ounces is my go-to conversion now.
It’s kind of a relief, actually. Now I can confidently convert any recipe that calls for cups of chocolate chips into ounces, and my cookies will (hopefully!) turn out perfect every time.
