Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “dump cake” recipes all over the place, and I finally decided to give one a try. I went with a peach cobbler using cake mix because, well, who doesn’t love peach cobbler? Plus, it seemed super easy.
First, I grabbed a couple of cans of sliced peaches in heavy syrup. I didn’t drain them, just dumped the whole shebang into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Two cans seemed to be just about the right amount to fill it up nicely.
Next, I took a box of yellow cake mix – just the dry mix, mind you – and sprinkled it evenly over the top of the peaches. It looked a little weird, just dry powder on top of fruit, but I trusted the process (sort of).

Then came the butter. I used a whole stick of butter, sliced into thin pats. I arranged the butter pats all over the top of the cake mix, trying to get good coverage. It felt like a LOT of butter, but hey, everything’s better with butter, right?
Note: I used unsalted butter.
I popped the dish into a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. I didn’t set a timer at first, just kept peeking at it every so often.
After about 45 minutes or so, it started to look golden brown and bubbly. I poked it with a fork to make sure the topping was cooked through and not gooey underneath. It seemed done, so I pulled it out.
I let it cool for a little bit before scooping out a big serving. The top was nice and crispy, and the peaches underneath were warm and gooey. It was definitely sweet, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream made it even better! Seriously, it’s pretty good for something so ridiculously easy to make.
My conclusion
- Super Easy: Seriously, the hardest part was slicing the butter.
- Pretty Tasty: It’s not gourmet, but it’s definitely satisfying, especially with ice cream.
- Customizable: I’m already thinking about trying it with different fruits and cake mix flavors. Cherry and chocolate, maybe?
So, yeah, I’d say this “dump cake” thing is a win. I’ll probably be making this again when I need a quick and easy dessert.
