Okay, so the other day I was itching to get outside and do some cooking over the fire. I remembered I had these pie irons sitting in the garage, and I thought, “Why not try something new?” I’d seen some cool recipes online, so I decided to give it a shot.

Getting Started

First things first, I gathered all my supplies. This meant digging out the pie irons, which were a little dusty, and giving them a good scrub. Then I checked my camping gear for my cooking spray, and I made sure that is enough for me.

The Recipes

I decided to try two different recipes: one savory and one sweet. I think the simple is the best.

  • Pizza Pockets: For these, I grabbed some pre-made pizza dough, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni. I love pepperoni!
  • Cherry Pies: This one was super easy. I used canned cherry pie filling and some bread.

The Cooking Process

The cooking part was actually pretty fun. I built a nice little fire in my fire pit and let it burn down to some hot coals. I should get it ready.

For the pizza pockets, I sprayed the inside of the pie irons with cooking spray, then laid in a piece of the dough. I spooned in some sauce, cheese, and pepperoni, and then topped it with another piece of dough. I clamped that pie iron shut and stuck it right in the coals.

The cherry pies were even simpler. Spray the iron, put in a slice of bread, spoon in some filling, top with another slice of bread, and clamp it shut. Into the fire it went!

Patience is Key

It’s important to cooking food slowly. I’d say I flipped the irons every few minutes to make sure they cooked evenly. I learned the hard way in the past that if you leave them too long on one side, you end up with a burnt mess. Because I am a careless man.

The Results!

After about, I don’t know, maybe 10-15 minutes total, I carefully pulled the pie irons out of the fire. I let them cool for a bit, because that metal gets HOT. Then, I opened them up, and wow! The pizza pockets were golden brown and bubbly, and the cherry pies looked amazing, all warm and gooey.

They tasted even better than they looked! The pizza pockets were like little personal pizzas, and the cherry pies were the perfect sweet treat. It’s the best I’ve ever tasted!

So, that’s my pie iron cooking adventure. It was a lot of fun, super easy, and the food was delicious. I’m definitely going to be trying more pie iron recipes in the future. Maybe apple next time? Or even something with eggs and bacon for breakfast… the possibilities are endless!
