Okay, so I’ve been meaning to try my hand at making dairy-free ice cream for a while now. I mean, who doesn’t love ice cream, right? But with some dietary restrictions in the family, the regular stuff is off the table. So, I finally decided to take the plunge and use my trusty Cuisinart ice cream maker for this little experiment.

First off, I dug up a few recipes online. I saw some interesting ones – mango, mint, you name it. It’s kinda cool that you can whip up pretty much any flavor you want. And the best part? This whole process takes about 3 hours from start to finish, give or take.

I gathered all my ingredients – nothing too fancy, just the usual suspects for a dairy-free base. Mixed them all together in a bowl. Oh, and I used a hand mixer on low speed, but a whisk would’ve worked just fine. Once it was all smooth, I covered the bowl and stuck it in the fridge. They said to chill it for at least 2 hours, so I did just that.

Churning Time

After the waiting game, it was time to churn. I poured the chilled mixture into my Cuisinart. Now, here’s a little tip I learned: the paddle isn’t supposed to spin with the bowl. Just the bowl spins, and the paddle kinda bumps against the cover and stays put. It’s a bit weird, but that’s how it mixes everything. So the mixture would pass by the stationary paddle and would be mixed in the process.

I let it churn for about, I don’t know, maybe 20 minutes? You’re looking for that soft-serve consistency. It’s ready when it comes out in a thick, continuous ribbon. Pretty satisfying to watch, I gotta say.

Double Batches? Maybe

I also found out that if your mixture and the room are cold enough, you might be able to churn two batches back-to-back. But fair warning, cleaning the bowl in between is a pain since it’s freezing cold. I only did one batch this time, but maybe I’ll try two next time.

  • Get your ingredients and mix ’em up.
  • Chill the mixture for a couple of hours.
  • Churn it in your Cuisinart.
  • Watch for that soft-serve texture.
  • Enjoy your homemade, dairy-free ice cream!

And there you have it – my first attempt at dairy-free ice cream. It turned out pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Whether you’re avoiding dairy for health reasons or just want to try something new, give it a shot. It’s easier than you think!
