Okay, so the other day I was following this super yummy-looking chocolate chip cookie recipe, and it called for 8 ounces of chocolate chips. Now, I usually just eyeball stuff, but I wanted these cookies to be perfect, you know? So, I needed to figure out exactly how many cups that was.
My Chocolate Chip Measuring Adventure
First, I grabbed my trusty dry measuring cups. I remembered someone once telling me that you gotta use the dry ones for stuff like flour and, well, chocolate chips. Liquid measuring cups are a whole different ball game, apparently.
I scooped the chocolate chips into the measuring cup, making sure to fill it all the way to the top. Then, I used a knife (the back of it, not the pointy part!) to level off the extra chips that were poking out. Gotta be precise, right?
I did this a couple of times, just to be extra sure, I don’t want to mess up a good cookie plan
- First scoop: Looked like a little over a cup.
- Second scoop: Seemed closer to 1 and 1/3 cups.
I felt pretty confident that it was around 1 and 1/3 cups. The recipe would have work if it’s not perfect correct, it will still be delicious.
Oh, and one more thing I learned! Some super-baker types online said that if you really, really want to be accurate, you should use a kitchen scale. Apparently, weighing ingredients is way more precise than using cups. But honestly, who has time for that when you’ve got a cookie craving? Not me! Plus, I didn’t want to make a big deal, cleaning a kitchen scale just for this chocolate chips? No, Thanks!
And don’t even think about shaking the cup to settle the chocolate chips! It’s tempting, I know, but resist the urge. It will pack the cup and end up use a lot more, and that will mess the whole recipe up.
