Okay, so I’ve been craving banana bread lately, but I wanted something a little extra, you know? That’s when I thought, why not chocolate banana bread? I didn’t want to start from scratch, so I decided to use a cake mix as a shortcut. Here’s how it went down:
First, I grabbed a box of chocolate cake mix from the pantry. Any brand will do, just make sure it’s the one you like. Then, I needed some ripe bananas. I had three that were looking pretty spotty, which is perfect because they’re extra sweet and mushy.
I mashed those bananas up in a big bowl until they were basically liquid. Next, I dumped in the cake mix, along with two eggs. I also added about a half cup of milk to get the right consistency. You might need a little more or less, just eyeball it until it looks like regular cake batter.

Now, for the fun part! I tossed in a handful of chocolate chips because, well, more chocolate is always better, right? You could also add some nuts if that’s your thing, but I kept it simple.
I mixed everything together until it was just combined. Don’t overmix, or the bread will be tough. Then, I poured the batter into a greased loaf pan. I used a standard 9×5 inch pan, but you can use whatever you have.
Baking time!
I popped the pan into a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). It took about 50-60 minutes for my bread to bake through. You’ll know it’s done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once it was out of the oven, I let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before flipping it out onto a wire rack to cool completely. It was tough to wait, but trust me, it’s worth it.
- Get chocolate cake mix
- Mash ripe bananas
- Mix all ingredients
- Add chocolate chips
- Pour into a loaf pan
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 50-60 mins
- Cool down before serving
The result? A moist, chocolatey banana bread that was so easy to make. Using the cake mix saved me a bunch of time, and it tasted just as good as homemade, maybe even better! I will absolutely be making this again.
