Hey, you there! Wanna know somethin’? I’m gonna tell ya how to make that macaroni and cheese, you know, the kind everyone likes, but without that cow juice, milk! Yep, you heard me right, no milk needed! My grandkids, they come over, and sometimes they forget the milk. So, what’s a grandma to do? Gotta figure it out, right? So I did. And now, I’m sharin’ it with you. It is easy, you will see!
Now, some folks, they get all fancy. They talk about this kind of milk and that kind of milk. Almond milk, they say. Soy milk. Rice milk. Coconut milk. Sounds like somethin’ from one of them fancy city stores, don’t it? Well, maybe you can use them, and sure, almond milk works, but who has those things just layin’ around? Not me! We are talkin’ about mac and cheese without milk, the easy way.
First thing you gotta do is boil up your macaroni. Just like always. Lots of water, little bit of salt. You know the drill. Get those little elbow noodles nice and soft. Then, you drain ’em. Pour out all that hot water. Be careful, don’t burn yourself! Then put them noodles back in the pot.

Now, here’s the trick. You can use water instead of milk. Yes, just plain old water. See, told ya it was easy. But water, it ain’t gonna make it creamy, you know? It’s just…water. It won’t be thick like when you use milk. So what can you do? Well, if you got some of that chicken broth, that’s good! That stuff you use for soup. That makes it taste real good, gives it some of that, you know, good flavor.
So, you got your cooked macaroni, right? And you got your water or your chicken broth. If you have the chicken broth, you pour some of that in with the macaroni. Not too much, just enough to get things goin’. Then, you add your cheese! Lots of cheese! The more the better, I always say. Stir it all up real good. The heat from the noodles, it’ll melt that cheese all nice and gooey.
If you have some of that heavy cream, you can add a little of that too with the chicken broth. It will be creamy, oh yes! Makes it extra special. But if you don’t, don’t you worry. It’ll still be good. Just make sure that cheese is melted, and everything is mixed up.
Some people like to put butter in their mac and cheese. Makes it richer, they say. You can do that too, if you want. Just a little pat of butter, melt it in with the cheese. And if you got some of those bread crumbs, you can sprinkle them on top. Some folks put it in the oven for a bit after that, to get it all bubbly. But you know what? I’m usually too hungry to wait! I just eat it right out of the pot!
So there you have it. Macaroni and cheese without milk. Easy peasy, right? You don’t need no fancy ingredients. Just what you got in your kitchen. Water, chicken broth, heavy cream if you have it, they all can work. And cheese, of course! Don’t forget the cheese! It ain’t mac and cheese without the cheese! That’s for sure.
Now, let me tell you some things you can add to make your milk-free mac and cheese even better. It will not taste bland, just try!
- Garlic powder: Just a little sprinkle, not too much. Gives it a nice kick.
- Onion powder: Same as the garlic, just a pinch. Adds some flavor.
- Mustard: A little dab of that yellow mustard, not the fancy kind. Makes it tangy.
- Pepper: Black pepper, white pepper, whatever you got. Just a dash.
- Salt: If you didn’t salt the water enough when boiling the pasta, add some now.
You see, makin’ macaroni and cheese without that regular milk ain’t so hard. Just gotta use what you got. And don’t be scared to try new things. Maybe you got somethin’ else in your kitchen that would be good in there. Get creative! That’s what cookin’ is all about. And don’t listen to them folks who say you gotta do things a certain way. There ain’t no rules in the kitchen, ‘cept maybe don’t burn the house down! Hahaha! So go on now, make yourself some mac and cheese. You can do it, I know you can!
One more thing, if you have some cooked bacon or some cooked sausage, cut into small pieces and put in the mac and cheese. That is delicious. Or some cooked chicken. Any meat will do. Vegetables? I don’t like vegetables, but you can put them in if you like. Some people put peas in their mac and cheese. I don’t like peas. But you can try, if you like them. Broccoli? I don’t know. Try, and see if you like it! And if you don’t like it, don’t put it next time. That is how it works, you see.
