Today, I decided to bake a chocolate cake. I’ve never baked a cake from scratch before, always used those box mixes, you know? But I found this recipe online that looked pretty simple, so I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”
Gathering the Ingredients
First things first, I printed out the recipe and stuck it on the fridge. Gotta have it in plain sight, right? Then, I started pulling out all the stuff I needed:
- Flour
- Sugar
- Cocoa powder
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
- Eggs
- Milk
- Vegetable oil
- Vanilla extract
I checked each ingredient against the recipe, making sure I had the right amounts. I even used my kitchen scale for the flour and sugar – didn’t want to mess that up!

Mixing it All Up
Next, I grabbed a big mixing bowl and dumped in all the dry ingredients: the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and baking powder. I took a whisk and gave it all a good stir, making sure everything was nicely combined, no lumps allowed!
In a separate bowl, I whisked together the wet ingredients: eggs, milk, oil, and that lovely vanilla extract. It smelled so good already!
Then, I slowly poured the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing with a spatula as I went. I made sure not to overmix it – just until everything was combined into a smooth, chocolatey batter.
Baking Time!
I preheated the oven to 350°F (that’s about 175°C for my metric friends) while I greased and floured a cake pan. I carefully poured the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it out evenly.
Into the oven it went! The recipe said to bake for 30-35 minutes, so I set a timer and waited. My kitchen started smelling amazing – like a chocolate factory!
The Moment of Truth
After 30 minutes, I stuck a toothpick into the center of the cake. It came out clean, which means it was done! I carefully took the cake out of the oven and let it cool in the pan for a bit before flipping it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
And there you have it – my first ever homemade chocolate cake! It looked pretty good, if I do say so myself. Now, time to frost it and, most importantly, eat it!
