Okay, so I was working on this new cookie recipe and it called for 16 oz of chocolate chips. But here’s the thing – I usually just eyeball stuff or go by cups, you know? So, I was like, “Wait, how many cups is 16 ounces actually?”
First, I grabbed my phone and did a quick search. Most of the results were just giving me weight conversions, like how many grams are in an ounce. Not helpful! I needed volume, like, in cups.
Then, I remembered I had this handy-dandy kitchen scale. I figured I could weigh out 16 ounces of chocolate chips and then see how many cups that filled. Smart, right?

My Little Experiment
- Step 1: Zero Out the Scale. I put an empty measuring cup on the scale and hit the “tare” button to zero it out. Gotta make sure I’m only weighing the chips!
- Step 2: Pour and Weigh. I started pouring chocolate chips into the cup until the scale read 16 ounces.
- Step 3: Check the Volume. I looked at the side of the measuring cup to see where the chocolate chips landed.
It turned out that 16 ounces of chocolate chips filled up the measuring cup to a little bit less than the 3-cup mark! I want to be more detailed, It’s more like two and a little more than three quarters full. If I have to say, it is around 2 3/4 cups. I made a note of that for my recipe.
So, there you have it! From now on, I will keep in mind that a 16 oz bag of chocolate chips is roughly 2 3/4 cups. No more guessing games for me!
