Lemongrass vs. Lemon Balm: Are They the Same Thing? Find Out Here!

Okay, here’s my blog post about lemongrass and lemon balm, written in a casual, personal style:

So, the other day, I was at the farmer’s market, trying to grab some herbs for my tea. I saw something labeled “lemon balm” and thought, “Hey, that sounds refreshing!” But then I remembered I had some “lemongrass” at home and started wondering if they were actually the same thing. I mean, they both have “lemon” in the name, right?

I grabbed a bunch of both anyway, figuring I’d sort it out later. Back home, I started my little investigation. First, I just looked at them side-by-side. The lemon balm had these kinda soft, rounded leaves, almost like mint. The lemongrass, on the other hand, was all long, stiff, and grassy – totally different vibe.

The Sniff Test

Next up, the smell test! I crushed a leaf of lemon balm between my fingers – definitely lemony, but also kinda sweet and, well, balmy. Then I snapped a piece of lemongrass. Whoa! That was a much stronger, sharper lemon scent, with a bit of a grassy kick to it.

Digging Deeper

Still not 100% convinced, I decided to do some quick online searching. Turns out, they’re not even in the same plant family!

  • Lemon balm is part of the mint family.
  • Lemongrass, they are from grass family.

I learned that lemon balm is often used in teas and for its calming properties, I even found that is supposed to help with * that is exactly what I’m looking for!

Lemongrass is a staple in a lot of Asian cooking – Thai, Vietnamese, you name it,which my wife is really into that!

The Experiment

I’m gonna make some lemon balm tea tonight before bed and I will save the lemon grass to my wife.

So, there you have it! My little adventure in the world of lemony herbs. Definitely not the same, but both awesome in their own way!
