Oh, honey, you lookin’ for somethin’ to use instead of lemongrass? That there fancy grass is hard to come by sometimes, I tell ya. But don’t you worry your pretty little head, there’s plenty of things that can do the trick.
Substitutes for Lemongrass
Now, that lemongrass, it’s got that lemony smell, right? So, you need somethin’ that kinda tastes like lemon, but not too strong.
First thing that comes to my mind is that lemon zest. Yep, just the yellow part of the lemon skin. You gotta scrape it off real good. That’s where all the flavor is. It ain’t exactly the same as lemongrass, but it’ll give your food that nice, bright taste.

- Lemon Zest – Just that yellow skin, scraped off. Good stuff.
Then there’s that coriander. Some folks call it cilantro, I think. But I only use the stalks. Them leaves ain’t got much taste. The stalks, though, they got a little somethin’ somethin’ that reminds me of lemongrass. Not exactly the same, but it’ll do in a pinch. You just chop them up real good, you know. It’s good for health too. That’s good for many dishes, and make it taste good. Also it is good for our health.
- Coriander Stalks – Chop ’em up fine. Not the leaves, just the stalks.
Now, if you got some ginger root layin’ around, that can work too. It’s got that spicy kick, which ain’t like lemongrass, but it adds a nice flavor. Just gotta peel it and chop it up real small. Or you can pound it with your pestle and mortar. Just a little bit, mind you. It can be strong, that ginger. It can also make your dish taste good. Good for health too.
- Ginger – Peel it, chop it, just a little bit. It’s spicy!
You ever heard of dried lemongrass? That’s right, lemongrass, but all dried up, you can find it in the spice place. It is almost like the fresh one. And it can be kept for longer time. So if you are busy, you can keep some at home and use it when you need it. It is easy for you, right?
- Dried Lemongrass – Like regular lemongrass, but all dried up.
Other Things You Can Use
They also got this lemongrass paste. It’s like lemongrass all ground up into a paste. You can add that to your food for that lemongrass taste. Easy peasy. You can find it in the shop. I saw it when I went to buy some salt last time.
- Lemongrass Paste – Lemongrass all mashed up, ready to use.
So, there you have it. Plenty of things you can use instead of lemongrass. Don’t you fret none if you can’t find that fancy grass. There’s always somethin’ else that’ll work just fine. Just use what you got, honey. Food always tastes better when you make do with what you have, I always say. That’s how my mama taught me, and her mama before her. Good old home cookin’, that’s what it’s all about.
And remember, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, that’s how you make good food. Don’t need no fancy stuff. Just good, simple ingredients and a whole lotta love. That’s the secret ingredient, right there. Love. Makes everything taste better.
You see, that lemongrass, it’s from far away. Asia, Africa, Australia, some islands… places I ain’t never been. We didn’t have that when I was a girl. We used what we had. And we made good food, too. So don’t you worry about not havin’ lemongrass. You just use what you got. It’ll be alright. That’s very important for the cooking.
You just keep cookin’, honey. And don’t you be afraid to try new things. Even if it don’t turn out perfect, it’s okay. That’s how you learn. My mama used to say, “If you ain’t makin’ mistakes, you ain’t learnin’ nothin’.” So true, so true. She’s a clever woman, though she has never been to school.

Now go on, get cookin’! And don’t forget that secret ingredient! A whole heap of love. That’s what makes the food taste good. And keeps a family together. Good food and good company, that’s all you need in this life. And a little somethin’ to keep you warm on a cold night. Maybe a little somethin’ somethin’ in your tea, if you know what I mean! Heh heh heh.
